Socratic Seminars West and
The Invisible School present :

INTRODUCTORY TRAINING

FOR

SOCRATIC SEMINAR LEADERS

Socratic Seminars are a powerful mode of teaching and learning which develop careful reading, attentive listening, clear speaking, and critical thinking. Seminars are a team-learning activity, applicable to any age and any subject area. As participants make connections between the ideas in the text being explored, their prior learning, and their life experience, they construct meaning together.

Because seminars develop a style of conversation distinct from the modes of debate and discussion to which we are accustomed, they also have application in the conversations of educators involved in restructuring. Peter Senge, in The Fifth Discipline, describes this mode of dialogue as one of the core disciplines of the "Learning Organization".

The trainer will be Peter Winchell, a colleague of Dennis Gray. This workshop will be presented in a four-day intensive format, designed for deep embodiment of the principles of dialogue. By the conclusion of the final meeting, participants will have the understanding, the skills, and the confidence to begin successfully leading seminars in the classroom and with colleagues. Fee includes a free one-day follow up next fall.
